Located between the Loire and the Cher valleys, the Château du Moulin (literally, windmill castle) is a monument partaking of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Nestled between woods and prairies, in the heart of Sologne, the castle’s pink brick towers and slate roofs are mirrored in the water of its moats. This intimate family castle comes into view only at the last moment, at the end of an alley bordered with hundred-year-old trees.
The “Moulin” castle was built between 1480 and 1502 according to the plans of the court’s master bricklayer, Jacques de Persigny, for Philippe du Moulin, a career soldier close to King Charles VIII, whose life he saved during the battle of Fornoue in Italy. This feat earned him the recognition of the king, who knighted him on the battlefield. As its construction overlapped two different period in history, the “pearl of Sologne” is at once a fortified Middle Ages castle and a Renaissance seigneurial residence. Its many pleasing features include moats, arbalesters, machicolations, donjon, mullioned windows and ornamental conches.
After having remained the property of the descendants of Philippe du Moulin until the early 20th century, the château was acquired by Marcel Compaignon de Marchéville who, along with his son Louis, conducted major restoration over fourteen years. Modern comforts of the time – bathroom, central heating, telephone… – were set up in the château. Furniture, tapestries and carefully chosen upholstery enhance the charm of a family house that has been open for visits since 1953.
The Château du Moulin now hosts a strawberry conservatory and invites you to discover nectarous fruit in the strawberry museum, which is located in the ancient stables. No less than forty varieties of strawberries, past and present, may be seen in the 2.5-acre vegetable garden.
